Hello everyone. I’m a regular Ubuntu Studio user (24.10) who uses Ubuntu Studio for digital painting, graphic design and 3D production. I’ve been following Ubuntu Studio since 2009… These have been mentioned in previous posts published here.
In fact, I follow Ubuntu Studio almost every day, especially the news posted on the official website. I saw that in the news “Ubuntu Studio 24.04.2 LTS Released, and Financial Help Needed” published on February 20, 2025, Ubuntu Studio people are asking for donations from more people, and I am worried about the situation of everyone at Ubuntu Studio and the future of Ubuntu Studio…
I don’t have the money to donate to Ubuntu Studio for financial reasons - I donate a dollar a week to the Ubuntu Studio project via Liberapay, but that’s all I can help this far… I really don’t have any money, sorry. So I would like to make some suggestions for the future development of Ubuntu Studio in other ways, such as to help Ubuntu Studio get more attention and love from more people, and through these, Ubuntu Studio will get more donations to sustain the development of Ubuntu Studio.
First of all, Ubuntu Studio is an operating system for artistic creation. Let’s take a look at Krita (pre-installed in Ubuntu Studio), a software for creating art.
Krita holds a monthly drawing event on its official forums (https://krita-artists.org/), and although there are no physical prizes (e.g. prize money), the winners’ drawings can be featured on the Krita website, and sometimes Krita will interview some of the best artists who use Krita, and these interviews will be featured prominently on the Krita website.
I’ve noticed that the official Ubuntu Studio website usually only publishes Ubuntu Studio updates, so we can also make full use of the Ubuntu Studio official website… First of all, we can also hold art creation activities on a regular basis by integrating all available channels (such as the official community of Ubuntu Studio - Ubuntu Studio - Ubuntu Community Hub) - not only for painting creation, but also for 3D creation (Blender), video creation (Kdenlive, etc.), music creation (Ubuntu). Studio is the best at this) and so on, and then select the best works and publish them on the official website of Ubuntu Studio; In addition, we can also conduct interviews with artists who use Ubuntu Studio and publish the interviews on the official Ubuntu Studio website, so as to attract more attention to the Ubuntu Studio official website and Ubuntu Studio itself.
Then, we can also promote Ubuntu Studio through social platforms. I live in China and am a little familiar with the following social media platforms.
微博 (https://weibo.com/) - a comprehensive communication platform.
Bilibili (https://bilibili.com/) - I like Japanese comics, and there are more young people, mainly to post videos, and of course dynamics can also be.
Lofter (https://www.lofter.com/) - You can post artwork and videos, but you can’t post links.
小红书 (https://www.xiaohongshu.com/) – You can post almost anything you’re interested in, but you can’t post links.
爱发电 (https://afdian.com/) - Similarly, you can post artwork and videos, but you are not allowed to post links… However, you can set up a donation/sponsorship program, which is essentially an excellent sponsorship platform.
For example, we can enter these platforms and publish these contents from time to time:
· Ubuntu Studio updates and news;
· various artworks created using Ubuntu Studio and related content;
· Interviews with artists using Ubuntu Studio;
· Everything else related to Ubuntu Studio, including activities related to Ubuntu Studio.
It should be noted that with the exception of 爱发电 (https://afdian.com/), other platforms do not welcome donation invitations (in fact, users of most platforms are not very welcome… But the purpose of entering these platforms is to indirectly promote Ubuntu Studio, so that Ubuntu Studio will be more popular, and it will also indirectly increase the donation income of Ubuntu Studio… Should.
We can also actively reach out to these platforms that also use open source software, open source software enthusiasts, at least those who use the open source software pre-installed in Ubuntu Studio, invite them to experience Ubuntu Studio, and if they also like Ubuntu Studio, you can also ask them to help spread the word. I don’t know, but I know these well-known enthusiasts, you can get in touch.
岑轩漠 (https://space.bilibili.com/141311487) - Krita enthusiast.
只剩一瓶辣椒酱 (https://space.bilibili.com/35723238) left - Blender lovers.
BlenderOfficial (https://space.bilibili.com/3546814074587443) — BlenderOfficial.
Finally, the area I know the most is Anime.
About 11 months ago, I submitted a mascot character to Ubuntu Studio, but it was rejected. (https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/i-just-want-to-contribute-to-ubuntu-studio-ubuntu-studio/43430/1)
In fact, not only Krita’s Kiki, but also other well-known Anime communication platforms (the Bilibili mentioned above has two mascot characters) or drawing apps (I remember CLIP Studio Paint, and dotpict) have their own mascot characters, and these mascot characters are more human.
A good professional-grade operating system can also have its own mascot role… I think so. If you can, I’d like everyone at Ubuntu Studio to reconsider this proposal.
If it can be approved, everyone in Ubuntu Studio can create related art for Hanada Lydia (花田莉dia, 花田リディア) and publish it to the relevant platform - for everyone in Ubuntu Studio, the license for Hanada Lydia is CC0.
If this is the case, it should be a great thing to be able to accumulate popularity for Ubuntu Studio among Anime fans.
… That’s all for now. I hope these suggestions will be helpful for the future development of Ubuntu Studio, and I hope that these suggestions will help Ubuntu Studio get out of the predicament.
I’m just a regular Ubuntu Studio enthusiast, but I’d like to be able to help Ubuntu Studio with something as well. I’m sorry, but I’m not a programmer, and I can’t help Ubuntu Studio with anything.
By the way, I wrote a book not long ago called “Ubuntu Studio 24.10非专业入门教程”, which can be found here:
https://weibo.com/7832521706/P6Piatb1L
But written very amateurishly … I don’t know if everyone at Ubuntu Studio can afford it.
