I use ubuntu 24.04.3 is that also an ubuntu server?

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS like most Ubuntu releases, is available in many forms.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is available as

  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Desktop (ie. with a GUI)
  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Server (text only interfacte)
  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS flavors offering different GUI/desktop options
  • etc

They’re all Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, with the major difference just being what packages are installed ‘out of the box’ (ie. what you see after initial install).

You can install a Server ISO, and add desktop meta packages and your Server install will become a Desktop install. You can also do the same with flavors, OR change a desktop install to a Server install (this can be slightly more difficult; depending on release; but still possible).

Any release or flavor of Ubuntu can be used as a server.

Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 can be used as a server.
Ubuntu Server 24.04.3 can be used as a server.

thank you for the reply - its helpful. I have 24.04.3 desktop so I guess I am fine. I tried, on another machine to upgrade to 25.04 and got it done but then the system just died. Haven’t had time to fix it yet. I do not think it was ubuntu something else happened.
