I am a bit confused on the upgrade

I signed up with 24.01 several months ago, it wasn’t good and I went back to 22.04 Then I began to wonder about trying to upgrade again. My software updater has been telling me that the upgrade was to 24.01 I notice, now, that its at 24.04.01 I then thought I would ask about that by asking what is currently available for the update upgrade. This time I got 24.10

So, should I just wait a bit more before upgrading, go with 24.04.01 and or 24.10 or what? I think the 24.10 one might be a mistake but I saw it in a couple of places.

You won’t be able to upgrade from 22.04 to 24.10. You can upgrade from LTS to LTS or from LTS to the next version after it, but you can’t jump versions if it’s not from one LTS to the next.

I think that upgrading to 24.04.1 has been a mixed bag. I upgraded a server and ended up with a number of peculiarities that I had to fix. Quite likely, others have had no problems. If you want to be really sure, you could back up your user files, make a list of the additional programs you’ve installed (plus configs) and do a fresh install. You can then make your customisations on the new install.

You are mistaken. There never has been a 24.01.

Ubuntu version numbers are based on the year and month of release. 2024 = 24 and April = 04, hence 24.04 in the yy.mm format.

In August of 2024, we saw the first point-release, or bugfix release, of 24.04, 24.04.1. That’s what you’re referring to.

October of 2024 saw the release of 24.10, meaning 2024, 10th month (October). It is a regular release and supported for 9 months (until July 2025).

24.04 is a Long-Term Support release (LTS) and has standard support (community, unpaid support) until April 2029. The exception to this being the Official Flavors, which are supported until April 2027.

So, the decision to use 24.04 LTS or 24.10 is up to you. If you use 24.10, expect to upgrade with every release. If you use 24.04 LTS, expect to upgrade every 2-4 years.

Moderator Note:

@drufus2002, this is the second topic you have opened in which you claim version numbers that don’t exist.

Cease doing that.

Please use the correct Ubuntu version numbers so that you will be understood.
