How to Request package update (24.04.1)

Hi,
How to request a deb/apt package (non-snap) update in Ubuntu 24.04.1?
This is a generic question.
Assume the package is in Ubuntu’s repository and is way outdated.

Thank you.

The short answer to “how” is to file a bug at launchpad.net requesting the update.
Or use the ubuntu-bug application from your terminal.

However, that’s unlikely to be a helpful answer, because such requests will usually be denied for many possible very-good reasons. They do occur, but rarely, and other alternatives are often preferable.

Maybe the reason for the older package is outside Ubuntu’s control. Perhaps the blocker is upstream somewhere.

Or perhaps it’s security related, so the CVE is mitigated with a patch instead of a version-bump.

There are many, many possibilities. Too many for a “generic” topic to cover them all.

Advice: Do a bit of sleuthing. Find out how the software reaches Ubuntu. Work your way up that chain until you find the reason(s) for the delay.

Thank you for response.
In the current case it appears Ubuntu just wants to promote snap, and no other reason.
The package has nothing to do with OS core.

So it’s not a generic question after all.
You actually have something in mind.

Rather than make us guess what your actual question or problem might be, why don’t you just ask it?
Without the strong opinions, please.

This is the workplace of Ubuntu developers. They don’t go to your workplace and accuse you of being nefarious. Be similarly respectful. It’s REQUIRED by the Ubuntu Code of Conduct.

I’m sorry that my post looks “nefarious” to you, I simply stated the fact of observation that there’s a current version of SNAP package and very old version in standard repository.
Not sure how stating of simple observation could possibly violate Ubuntu Code of Conduct?

It is a generic question. I encounter some outdated package very often.
Anyway I already filed a bug.
Thank you.

Closing to prevent tangents about snap-bashing and the Code of Conduct. Those are thoroughly discussed elsewhere.
