How to make persistent volume adjustments in Ubuntu

Hi everyone,
I installed Ubuntu and Windows 11 in dual-boot in my Lenovo V15 G4 IRU notebook.

Soon I realized that the system volume in Ubuntu is quite low respect to Windows. I though that the issue was with the proprietary drivers used by Windows, so when I could not watch a film because of very low volume in Ubuntu I used to switch to Windows. This is very annoying, so I did not give up on looking for a better solution.

What I’ve Tried

With the help of Gemini AI I found out that the volume of the sound card in Ubuntu is set to 50% by default, which corresponds to a 100% level showed by the GUI. Gemini suggested to adjust the volume by using alsamixer.

So I opened a terminal window, launched alsamixer and pressed F6 to regulate my sound card (HDA Intel PCH) levels of volume. I raised these levels to 88% because above that the colors of the bars were red. I exited from alsamixer and made persistent the changes by using the following command:

sudo alsactl store

I rebooted Ubuntu but the changes did not persist.
Gemini says that PipeWire keeps resetting everything during boot time, so suggested first to save alsamixer’s levels of the volume in a file inside my home folder:

alsactl -f ~/.asound.state store

then to use Startup Applications to add the following entry:

Name: Reset ALSA Volume
Command: alsactl -f ~/.asound.state restore
Comment: Resets alsa channels modified at boot time

However, again, nothing changed after rebooting the machine.
I do not know how to proceed: do any of you have a persistent solution?

You can easily enable “Over-Amplification”… :wink:

I would rather not use over-amplification in order to avoid distortion and clipping. I could use it for a temporary fix but not as the rule, because in the long run it can damage my speakers.

What happens when you use your desktop volume control? It should be remembered.

Yes, this is remembered, but the maximum does not correspond to the maximum of the sound card. If you open alsamixer the volume is still at 50%

They are irrelevant to the question, and contrary to the OP’s clearly-stated preference.

I forgot to mention I am running Ubuntu pro.
I read the official document for sound troubleshooting, and I honestly feel uneasy to run long commands in Terminal that remove components like that in step 4. At bottom I do not properly have sound troubles, I would only like to save my alsamixer or my system volume configuration after reboot, because the master channel keeps resetting at 50% and the other channels (Headphone, Speaker and PCM) do the same at 100%.
I also read step 5 and I do not see commands that generate a URL

I checked desktop volume control, as suggested by avb66, and it seems linked to the alsamixer’s master channel. It also resets to 50% after reboot, so it is not remembered, unlike I said in the previous response.

This is why the “overamplification” switch at System Settings → Sound exists (as shown e.g. at this other thread No Audio Output From Internal Speaker on Ubuntu 24.04 New Installation, Kernel 6.11( Alienware 16 Area 51 laptop) → Keep in mind that the “100%” in the warning is your 50%, not the actual hardware/firmware defined 100%). It enables the full range (and it persists just like you want), the same you have in Windows or, at least, very close. Indeed, as you noted in the OP, proprietary drivers in Windows can do additional things including an even wider range of volume and equalization.

Also understand this is exactly what you tried to do before when you followed Geminin’s suggestion.

Do note you should control the volume anyway, just like you do with the other OS. Other than this, your concerns are unfounded and illogical. That said, with this simple change, hopefully, you won’t need to reboot to the other OS just to watch a movie.

I should be said that some media players (e.g. VLC) and the media center Kodi also allow “volume boost” whenever needed. With VLC default settings it’s as easy as mouse scrolling up. With Kodi defaults settings/theme there’s no easy shortcut that I remember but clicking the cogwheel → Audio settings we find a “Volume amplification” scale that can be used when “Volume” is already maxxed out and the sound is still too quiet.

So, at the end of the day, you never really had to do this:
