How to copy Thunderbird profile folder to another computer

Running with Ubuntu 24.04.2 and snap thunderbird.

I have tried to move my profile folder to another computer and was told that I do not have permission to do that. I need to know how to move the profile folder to a stick and add it to the new thunderbird.

Thoughts?

We can help you better if you show us actual, complete input and output.

It’s very easy to take a screenshot in Ubuntu.
And just as easy to paste that screenshot into a post here on Discourse.

Thank you for the reply…

This is all very strange. I replied once, then I took a look and I had two replies exactly the same. So, I deleted one and that got rid of that one but I now have to reply again.

Here is what I am trying to do. I goto Thunderbird and goto Export. From there I can ge to the profile folder. I tried to copy it to a 2.1tb stick but it wouldn’t let me do that. I did, however, have access to all the files in the folder. So, I am currently copying them all to the stick and then will create a new folder to put them all in, with a name similiar to the one I couldn’t copy and then take the stick to the new computer and put the folder into Thunderbird and, hopefully, that should do the trick.

Thoughts?

I’ve recently had trouble in this area - this is what was successful. (Assuming you have the .thunderbird folder from your old computer on your stick). Copy the .thunderbird folder to your new computers /home directory. Install the snap version of thunderbird. Launch thunderbird and go tools/import. Point to the .thunderbird folder under /home and all your settings will be imported.

I have been trying to copy all the files in the thunderbird profile folder to a 2.1tb stick. I have run into “Filesystem does not support symbolic links” and have no idea how to make the 2.1tb stick have a filesystem that does support symbolic links.

Is there a way to do this?

Thank you…

Rather than copy all the files in the profile folder e.g. gyt7es.default-release try copying the whole .thunderbird folder (that contains the above, among other things) to your stick. I have done this many times with no issues.

just copy your ~/.mozilla folder. If its not under there then check in ~/.config somewhere.

Might be a combination. I recommend making a VM and doing a test restore to that and testing. This will verify the restore part and ensure you can restore the data when needed

I just copy the .thunderbird folder but if your using a snap version you have to find where it’s being stored on your machine. but find it and copy the .thunderbird folder to the same location on the new machine. you’ll get all you mail, settings and bookmark that way.

I also just copy the complete ~/.thunderbird folder from one computer to another and have done so for many years without a problem
This means I have all my email messages, contacts, etc, etc, that were on the old computer now on the new one, exactly as you are wanting.

I think I know my problem. I just copied the file. The thing is that I put it on a different stick. The one I was trying to copy to told me I couldn’t do it because “Filesystem does not support symbolic links”. This means I have it setup wrong. I will mark this as solved and will ask about my problem in a different posting.

Thanks for all the help!

It is true that the .thunderbird folder will not allow copying the sim link but just skip that and it should transfer everything else. you can redo the symlink if needed later.
