HDMI not detected with Nvidia GT 430

Ubuntu Version:
24.04 / 26.04 (only recently upgraded this box from 22.04; see procrastination…)

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
XFCE

Problem Description:

HDMI display not detected (xrandr can’t detect it)

It worked fine on 22.04, though the interface numbers changed after upgrading the OS (HDMI-0 → HDMI-1; same for VGA/DVI)

DVI and VGA work as expected, this is only HDMI

the status of HDMI in $(xrandr –listmonitors –verbose) yields the same output both with and without a display connected

Relevant System Information:

Nvidia GT 430 (nouveau) with 3 displays plugged in

This GPU officially support only 2 displays at a time, but i have always been able to turn one off to enable another; i think this was a artificial limitation of nvidia’s drivers that i have not used since before 22.04 (i know cause i rewrote a script to use xrandr instead of nvidia-settings)

What I’ve Tried:

Alternate display same results

installing the hwe kernel on 24.04

forcing 24.04 to upgrade to 26.04 $(do-release-upgrade -d)

checking dmesg and not finding anything of relevance

Google informs me the GT430 is around 16 years old.

I have also experienced unsolvable issues using old Nvidia cards with newer drivers.

I suggest you get a newer card. Another option is seeing DVI is working (not clear why) get a DVI to HDMI adapter.

I feel the pain. My daily use desktops and servers are all running Xeon CPU’s which need registered ECC RAM which one needs to remortgage their home for now :frowning:

I have a couple of slightly newer Nvidia cards kicking around. I think they are GT1030’s and this does work with the current driver. These should be pretty cheap to buy. But they only have 1x HDMI port.

I think if you wait a bunch of decent GPU’s will come on the market ex-AI. I remember the bonanza the dotcom crash was for used networking gear like Cisco and it cost heaps when it was new and was being sold for pennies in the dollar used and still perfectly good.

I think AI will do that all over again :slight_smile:
