Abstract

Intel AI PCs with Neural Processing Units (NPUs) represent an exciting new platform for AI computing and development. In this talk, we will run a live demo on an Intel AI PC showcasing how OpenVINO enables developers to harness the power of the CPU, GPU, and NPU simultaneously for AI workloads on Ubuntu. Next we will show how snaps provide a convenient and powerful method for packaging OpenVINO-powered apps with hardware acceleration support that “just works.” This will include a practical how-to for building such snaps followed by a showcase of snaps for three popular desktop apps - GIMP, Audacity, and OBS - that now include OpenVINO plugins for exciting (and fun!) use cases in Generative AI such as image and audio track generation.

Speaker(s) bio

Will French: I have a somewhat unique professional background that began in high-performance computing and scientific research, and more recently included embedded systems, IoT, and cloud infrastructure. The common thread has always been the Linux and open source ecosystem, and that’s what I’m most passionate about! I’ve been at Canonical since Feb 2024 and currently work to integrate the latest and greatest Intel products into Ubuntu. Outside of work I enjoy spending time outdoors with my wife and our two boys, travel, running, and a good cup of coffee.

Helena Kloosterman: As an AI Frameworks Engineer at Intel, Helena enables organizations to unlock the potential of AI by leveraging OpenVINO, Intel’s AI inference runtime. She focuses on making AI accessible by enhancing developer experience and integrating OpenVINO with popular ecosystems like Hugging Face. With a background in mathematics, Helena is passionate about empowering developers to easily deploy high-performance AI models on Intel hardware (CPUs, GPUs and NPU). Based in the Netherlands, she works to bridge the gap between complex AI technologies and practical applications.

  • Would this also be possible using flatpak instead?
  • perhaps Will be able to comment freely on the following
any pointers on upcoming support by ubuntu and developments in NPU options by other CPU hardware makers like AMD or ARM designs for similar local AI workloads. or is it something only Intel is developing?

You demonstrated open vino integration into GIMP, obs and Audacity. Are there other snaps out there you would like to receive the functionality?
Ex: kdenlive, open shot, blender

Helena suggested this repository as a demonstration of interesting things that are possible with OpenVino:
