Hardware works in kernel 6.14, doesn't work in 6.08 or 6.17

Ubuntu 22.04 Live USB has version 6.8.0-40.

Okay, noted! I’ll get to that sometime this evening then, I intend!

That I don’t want. o_o

I’ve been through that in recent years, and it’s always a pain: everything has to be backed up, then the OS reinstalled, then everything reinstalled, various bits of data and settings reestablished–and there’s often something that was missed in the backup process…

If we can get the 6.8 kernel (or whichever is appropriate) working in situ, that would be preferable, I feel. ^^;

In several years of having active Ubuntu Pro subscription I have never seen kernel distributed via Pro channels. Maybe you mean livepatch, but it does not give you the latest kernel - it just allows you to apply kernel patches without rebooting. The same patches you would get updating a normal kernel package.

Pro does not add any value here, there’s no need for it. Regarding kernel versions: Ubuntu Desktop installs linux-generic-hwe-24.04 which is - as the name suggests - a meta package for the HWE kernel. At 24.04 release time it pulls in 6.8 (the 24.04 GA kernel), then, as new releases become available, it pulls in 6.11 (from Oracular), then 6.14 (from Plucky), then 6.17 (from Questing) and finally 7.0 (from Resolute). It won’t go beyond 7.0. 6.8 and 7.0 are kernels from LTS releases so they are supported for the duration of those releases. 6.11, 6.14 and 6.17 are from interim releases and are EOL by now.

So basically an LTS will always have two supported kernels, the GA kernel and the HWE kernel which is a backport of the GA kernel of the next LTS release. As mentioned above, the HWE kernel is a rolling kernel that follows interim releases and settles at the next LTS.

See Ubuntu kernel lifecycle and enablement stack | Ubuntu.

I hope that clarifies things.

Ahh, interesting! That does indeed clarify some things–thank you!

As to the USB boot, I’ve just tried that, and… it works!

That is, booting into Ubuntu 22.04 from USB, I get a proper screen resolution, use of both monitors, and (while I haven’t tried it properly) it looks like WiFi support is present!

Furthermore, while on first boot the Nouveau graphics driver is selected, I see that the ā€œ535ā€ NVidia driver is available!

(And I did confirm, just to be safe, that the OS was indeed using the 6.8 kernel.)

So, from this I infer that there’s nothing wrong with the use of the 6.8 kernel itself on this system. The source of the difficulty must lie elsewhere–something to do with the setup as loaded when I select the 6.8 kernel from GRUB.

So, how might we find the source of this issue…? Is there a particular log file that might show an error, or a setting that I might experimentally change, or something…?

No, I don’t mean Livepatch. When you enable Pro, you get later kernels.

Prepare to be disappointed:

$ apt depends nvidia-driver-535
nvidia-driver-535
  Depends: nvidia-driver-580

No you don’t. Pro gives you ESM kernels but 24.04 is not ESM (yet).

Kernel log (output of dmesg or journalctl -k -b0). Or file that bug report that will have all the logs

*sigh* Why must my Saturday carry disappointment so early! XD;

I’ll look to the former shortly then, I intend!

(While I could I daresay file the bug report from the working live-USB installation, that seems unlikely to be helpful. And, as I think that someone noted above, attempting to file it from the non-working installation that we’re attempting to debug seems like it should be helpful–but unlikely to succeed.)

[edit]

I ran both commands–but as it looks like including both hits the character-limit for these posts, let me just post the journal output below. If the dmesg output is also desired, let me know and I can (hopefully) post it in a new message!

A few thoughts from what I see:

  • There seem to be no explicit errors or warnings (using those terms, at least)
    • But I don’t know whether errors or warnings are to be expected in this sort of output in response to issues
  • I note that neither output mentions NVidia at all
    • A quick look at the output of the ā€œjournalā€ command with my working kernel (6.14) does show lines referencing NVidia

Sorry. I stand corrected!

Ah, yes, that’s the transitional package that Ubuntu created to move everyone on 535 to 580. Disappointing in one way, yes, but inevitable so worth testing out. 535 is already in the dustbin; Rest In Peace you served us well! But 580 is the future for @arsthaumaturgis and me. Even that future will only last two years, after which our Maxwell-architecture cards will no longer be supported at all. If my 2014 Lenovo deskside tower is still kicking by then I’ll be looking at inexpensive GPU upgrades. Not sure what, if any, options will be available for laptops.

You say that, but historically it simply hasn’t worked for my laptop.

(Or at least, has resulted in significantly and unacceptably reduced performance.)

I really don’t see why we can’t just… keep using the old drivers. Sure, they’re outdated and out of support–but they’re for old hardware, which is what we have.

If I were running an old 486 with Windows 3.1, no-one would be insisting that I get the latest 2026 drivers for it, despite whatever drivers I had being far out of support…

Well, you could go with the unsupported option of purging all Ubuntu nvidia driver packages, switching to (in 24.04) the GA kernel 6.8.x, and then installing the 535 .run package from Nvidia. You won’t be getting any further updates for your Nvidia driver, but you will be getting updates for the 6.8 kernel.

I don’t believe the 535 driver is compatible with the 7.0 kernel, so remaining on the HWE track is not an option if you want to continue to receives kernel updates.

If you do want to stay on the HWE track, then realistically your only option is to go with the 580 driver. Since the 580 driver is the last driver that has any support for your hardware, you’ve got two years to get some new hardware.

It’s the need to be compiled into the kernel via DKMS, isn’t it? Along the lines of @gpmitch ā€˜s comment, I’d guess the only way to stick with the outdated driver long-term would be to lock in the kernel as well - which sooner or later will break something else or lead directly to dependency hell.

That sounds like the most appealing option, to me.

Which of course brings us back to the topic of the thread, which is getting the system into a functional state while using the 6.8 kernel…

Just to clarify: as far as I’m aware, I’m not on the HWE track.

(Unless I am so unawares…? Certainly not by intention, at least)

Surely only if one keeps updating things.

And I would hope that most updates would check for compatibility, and simply refuse if their requirements aren’t met…

I don’t know what things will be like for me in two years’ time, but right now a new computer is probably not a wise choice for me.

Naturally, I don’t know how long my hardware will last: it’s possible that a serious failure will force the issue.

I very much hope not, however.

But conversely, if finances allow–and ideally if the current increases in hardware prices slacken–I would very much like to get a new machine someday.

As long as you stay on the 6.8 GA kernel, dkms will compile the Nvidia kernel module from the Nvidia .run package.

Only trying to use the Ubuntu driver packages is going to lead having to stick to a particular kernel version, regardless if it’s the GA or HWE kernel.

Your hardware is listed as being supported by the 580 driver, aka compatible.

And that works for me!

Indeed, I was pretty happy on the 6.14 kernel until the update that caused all of this trouble, and had no real intention to switch one way or another. I’m only contemplating the 6.8 kernel at all, and the question of getting it working, because I was informed that it would be better (due to being supported).

That’s all very well and good, and in the strict sense true in that the computer and its graphics do function under the 580 driver.

But the performance to be had from it is far worse than under the 535 driver, and thus the 580 driver is unacceptable to me right now.

[edit] Look, if someone has a way to make the 580 driver perform on my computer like the 535 driver did, then I’m open to that. But otherwise, I’d say that the 535 driver is the way to go.

Desktop edition defaults to the HWE kernel.
