Hmm, yeah, I was worried about that. Fair enough, then. :/
Ahh, I see. Well, I’m glad that it is at least a known issue.
And thank you for telling me all of that! It helps to know what’s going on behind the scenes, and that this is something that’s acknowledged!
It sounds like it’s a pain on both the Ubuntu and the user side! :/
That is appreciated!
Well, to be clear, I’m not the one insisting on 6.8. I’ve been perfectly happy on 6.14, and would be happy to remain there if it continues to work!
Or, if we can get a later kernel working, that’s fine, too!
It’s just that I’ve been told here–repeatedly–that it’s “6.8, HWE, or nothing”!
Alas, I’ve been down that road a number of times. For whatever reason, Nouveau has never provided good performance on this machine, whether on Ubuntu 24.04 or earlier versions, as I recall.
(Indeed, a previous case of this “update decides to remove a working driver” business had it automatically shift me over to Nouveau, which caused not only performance degradation but a bug in the mouse-handling of (old) Blender.
In fact, that was back when I was using the “575” driver, the loss of which prompted me to move over to the “550” driver. Then another case cost me that driver, which prompted me to move over to the “535” driver.
In fairness, looking back at that latter case I do see that there was warning there that this might happen again. I’m just not sure of what I might have done about it.
Although I also see that I’d found reports of others having issues with the “580” driver, so it would seem that I’m not alone in that.)
I actually tried that option further up the thread. That’s how I managed to break my current 6.8 installation. ^^;
(To clarify: I’m not sure that “installation” is the right word here. In GRUB, I have multiple kernels listed. Booting into one of them gives me access to the same folders, etc. as any of the others, so they’re not fully-separate “installations”. But conversely, they seem to have at least some differences, so they’re at least somewhat separate.)
Basically, I fear that I don’t currently have the know-how to safely install the driver that way. Not without help.
I’ll confess that your talk of potential breakage is… worrying.
This computer is one that I use for both work and play. Having its performance so degraded is a big problem for me–but having it be nonfunctional would be worse. o_o
Would it be safe enough if I simply… don’t upgrade the kernel…?
