Hardware video acceleration in Firefox

Problem Description:
No hardware video acceleration in Firefox, Kubuntu 26.04. PC specifications are listed below. intel_gpu_top shows that hardware video acceleration is not being utilized while watching YouTube.

Sorry, I can’t seem to upload a screenshot - I keep getting an error message every time I try.

What I’ve Tried:
I am using the Firefox Snap version. I have also installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras package and tested the tarball version of Firefox, but the result remains the same. I did not experience this issue on Ubuntu 24.04, which I used previously.

I’ve had the same issue even before, and then when doing a clean 26.04 install, although I’m using a NVIDIA GPU. To fix it I had to install the nvidia-vaapi-driver then force the media hardware decoding in about:config. The funny part, even that did not work for the Firefox Snap; just for the Debian / Flatpak ones. I hope it helps

Go to Firefox settings and make sure that “Use hardware acceleration when available” is checked.

There is also a check box called “Use recommended performance settings.”

Intel UHD 730 is capable of hardware acceleration. I am confirming.

You can also check with about:support#media. I am using the official Firefox snap on Ubuntu 24.04 and have this:

firefox:gpu-2404 looks like the right candidate, or the 26.04 equivalent, which I think should just be firefox:gpu-2604. I also remember that it did take the Firefox snap until very recently to enable HW acceleration on Wayland with AMD hardware. I believe it was something to do with the core* on which it depended, which then got bumped to core24, IIRC; or gnome-46-2404.
But installing the VAAPI drivers, as suggested above may still be required; I am not quite sure about that, though.

I also have a ffmpeg-2404 snap. FFMpeg is used for doing the video decoding, I believe. And the info says:

I have the exact same Firefox connections.

I have managed to establish the following: hardware video acceleration is currently only working in the Brave browser, but not in Firefox or Chromium. All three browsers are installed as Snap packages.

To enable hardware acceleration for the .deb versions, I installed the intel-media-driver-va-non-free driver, replacing the one provided by the kubuntu-restricted-extras metapackage. This resolved the issue for the .deb versions of all browsers and VLC. However, I would prefer to use the Snap versions specifically.

How can I check which versions of the intel-media driver the Firefox and Chromium Snaps are using? Furthermore, is there a way to get hardware video acceleration working in these Snap-based browsers as well?

The drivers for snaps are usually shipped in the mesa-XX.XX packages … snaps get mounted under /snap so you should be able to inspect the content of a specific one there …

Just a side note: the Firefox snap bundles FFmpeg from the Noble archives, it’s not relying on the FFmpeg content snap (although it probably should in theory)

Could you open about:support, click Copy text to clipboard, and paste the Graphics and Media sections here? In particular, the most useful lines are:

  • Compositing
  • Window Protocol
  • Decision Log
  • HARDWARE_VIDEO_DECODING
  • the hardware codec rows in Media

That will let us tell whether this is:

  • a Firefox blocklist decision
  • a failed VA-API probe
  • a codec-detection problem
  • or a compositor / GPU process issue on Wayland

If possible, please also include the output of:

vainfo

That will confirm whether VA-API is working at the system level outside Firefox. Sounds like it is based on your experiments so far.

To add but a minor point, please try to copy the HTML code. In Firefox, you can press CtrlShiftc for the element picker, then “copy outer html” from the context menu of the highlighted code. That’s how I “produced” the table above (about:support#media). Discourse accepts that HTML as input in the editor.

Well, you do have support for H264, VP9, AV1 and HEVC hardware decoding.

Could you please play a YouTube video and share:

  • Stats for nerds → Codecs and Current / Optimal Res
  • the active playback entry from about:media

It’s also weird to me that your vainfo does not advertise AV1 support, but Firefox claims it can perform hardware decoding for that codec… If the YouTube stream you’re looking at is AV1, that may be a mismatch worth investigating more.

Also, try playing a 4K60 stream on YouTube. intel_gpu_top may stay close to 0% for low-res or or bursty playback.

That looks like it’s working, albeit with the gpu-2404 content snap:

which I thought should be gpu-2604, given that you are on Ubuntu 26.04, but there may be other reasons.

One additional note, there may still be considerably higher CPU load, even with hardware accelerated video decoding, from my own experience, because only the decoding of the video is accelerated. I can get much lower CPU load, when playing the same video with mpv and its yt-dlp hook.

All of my snap packages are updated.

I obviously don’t know that tool, given my AMD hardware, but is it possible that video decoding doesn’t count as GPU load?

As I said, there may be other reasons, why gpu-2404 is used. I seem to remember that snaps try to be as compatible as possible across all still supported Ubuntu versions.

Edit: But this could be a clue, similar to the aforementioned late enablement of HW acceleration on AMD hardware of the Firefox snap.
