Hello! Well this is a surprise. I went to the old forums and saw the message about the new home. Wow… it will be interesting to see how it grows and evolves as time goes by.
My name is Joel, username cbiweb. You can call me by either name. Any other names are acceptable within reason.
I live at the top of Nova Scotia, Canada, the region known as Cape Breton Island. It’s the part of Nova Scotia that resembles a baseball glove; which is funny, since hockey is the more popular sport here, haha.
I’m a mostly retired Web developer, having run my own very successful company from 1999-2017. That’s where my username comes from. The business was called CBI Web Services (the CBI is short for Cape Breton Island).
My first Linux experience was in March 2013 when I installed Ubuntu because my younger brother sang its praises so much. I used a spare laptop so I could learn all about it. That laptop died in November 2014 (not Ubuntu’s fault, lol), and I didn’t have another spare at the the time.
In 2022 I tried again, and tried Ubuntu again, and a couple of other distros. I liked one of them quite a bit, but the community put me off, and the laptop sat there for 2 years doing nothing.
April 2024, I was thoroughly disgusted with Windows/Microsoft, and I took the plunge and went full Linux on all my machines. Ended up with Kubuntu, and I’ve gotten to know it very well, and super happy with Linux as a whole.
At this point, I’m very interested in how to develop Linux supported software; how to help it become more and more relevant, and basically become a productive member of the community.
Even though I don’t run Ubuntu as is, when I get another spare machine I plan to install it, alongside a few other distros, so I can learn all I can.
I’m not usually a huge participant in forums & communities like this one, but I read a lot, and will speak up when I need to. Sort of a non-lurking lurker.
