Ubuntu Version
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Desktop Environment (if applicable)
GNOME
Problem Description
Recently, my Thinkpad trackpad has started freezing on me randomly. Click continues to work, but no movement is possible. In some cases closing laptop lid will fix the problem temporarily, but other times it requires a full shutdown. In fact, I recently had a case where the mouse movement was frozen immediately after login. In addition, in most cases if I log out the mouse is still frozen on the login screen.
I have attached an external mouse temporarily, but of course now that I have it in place I haven’t frozen since. Given the random behavior, I don’t necessarily consider this anything but coincidental. But, until I freeze again, I can’t determine if the external mouse is impacted or not.

What I’ve Tried
Hibernate/Reload
Close laptop lid
Shutdown/restart
sudo modprobe -r i2c_hid_acpi; sleep 5; sudo modprobe i2c_hid_acpi
A quick update. My trackpad just froze again. An external mouse worked. Another interesting data point is that it seems like after a period of time the laptop trackpad started working again. And like an idiot, I forgot that I also have a trackpoint on this machine that I never think to use. Surprisingly, that also seems to work fine when the trackpad stops working.
I would love any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and hopefully fix this problem. Obviously, having to keep an external mouse just to have for backup is not ideal at all.
Thanks again,
Craig
After it unfreezes, run:
dmesg | tail
What is the output please?
I was beginning to believe it wasn’t going to pop up again, but sure enough it finally did. Here is dmesg output. Let me know what else would be helpful.
╰─➤ sudo dmesg | tail

[26752.324934] usb 3-3: reset full-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd

The last line in your dmesg shows what happened
[26752.324934] usb 3-3: reset full-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
On your laptop, the touchpad is connected through an internal USB bus port 3-3
Verify what device 3-3 is
cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/3-3/product
If it is the touchpad- this is caused (usually :)) by USB autosuspend.
You can test disabling it with -
echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/devices/3-3/power/control
Interesting. I’m not sure why this would be happening after nearly a year without this issue. Unfortunately, first command is failing:
╰─➤ cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/3-3/product
cat: /sys/bus/usb/devices/3-3/product: No such file or directory
I have no idea if this helps, but here is a hardware dump:

Ahaaa, that makes sense now! Device 3-3 was just your fingerprint reader resetting after the sudo prompt…
Your dump shows the touchpad is actually on I2C
Try disabling runtime power management on it-
echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/i2c/devices/*ELAN*/power/control
And check what the kernel says 'bout it-
sudo dmesg | grep -i -E "elan|i2c"
kernel output seems quiet:
╰─➤ sudo dmesg | grep -i -E "elan|i2c"
[sudo] Place your right index finger on the fingerprint reader

I can try disabling power management if it still looks like it might help. In your command do I really want to send “on”?

Yes, exactly “on” !
In kernel power management, power/control only accepts “on” or “auto”
Your log confirms the exact path - i2c-ELAN0683:00, so you can safely run -
echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/i2c/devices/i2c-ELAN0683:00/power/control
Also, if it freezes again, keep a terminal open with journalctl -kf
when the freeze hits, you can see if the I2C bus logs a timeout.

So far, no hangs. Given this was intermittent, hard to know if I’m out of the woods. I did just see this pop up in dmesg output and thought it might be interesting or related.

I spoke too soon it seems. Mouse just froze up on me. Unfortunately, not seeing much in kernel logging:

Did you reboot or shut down the laptop since yesterday?
Remember that anything written to /sys is in RAM only and resets on reboot.
Check what it currently says:
cat /sys/bus/i2c/devices/i2c-ELAN0683:00/power/control
If it says auto, power management reverted back to default, which explains why it froze again.
If so, set it back to on:
echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/i2c/devices/i2c-ELAN0683:00/power/control
If this restores stability again, I will show you what to do to make it permanent across reboots.
Ahh… good point. I did reboot this morning. I’ve set power control again and will see what happens. Out of interest, any idea why this might have just started happening?

This could be due to a recent kernel or power-profiles-daemon update.
Modern kernels aggressively optimize power saving, causing a sleep-wake race condition on the I2C bus where the touchpad wakes up too slowly…
Whenever “miracles” like this start happening, it is almost always power saving

While this might be related to power management, I just hit the issue again with your solution.

Hmm… The plot thickens…
If clicks still work while movement dies, your hardware isn’t actually dead. If the I2C bus crashed, clicking wouldn’t do anything either…
A couple of things could be happening here-
Your parent Intel I2C controller decided to take a nap behind the touchpad’s back. We told the touchpad to stay awake, but the PCI controller (0000:00:15.0) might still be dozing off.
Slap it awake too -
echo on | sudo tee /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:15.0/power/control
And (if) when it freezes, test if kicking the driver brings it back without a reboot:
echo "i2c-ELAN0683:00" | sudo tee /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/i2c_hid_acpi/unbind
echo "i2c-ELAN0683:00" | sudo tee /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/i2c_hid_acpi/bind
And if it’s frozen, run sudo libinput debug-events and swipe around. If it spams motion events, your hardware is fine and GNOME/Wayland is the one ignoring you.
Are you on BIOS 1.28 which was released on 12th August 2026? May help
Thanks. I will keep digging. I’ve turned off power control for the PCI controller and trackpad.
It is funny that you mention hardware being dead. I started from power off this morning to power on to find the mouse frozen at desktop load. I’m increasingly concerned this is failing hardware. I don’t necessarily know how to be sure one way or the other, so I will continue trying your suggestions.
Good question. Looks like I’m up to date.

Just froze again. unbind/bind didn’t fix it and libinput debug-events is not showing any events. Unless you have any other thoughts, this is definitely starting to look like some kind of a hardware problem. The only thing I can’t really figure out is why it does seem to eventually come back if it is hardware.
One additional note… in a few of these cases, I do see a really weird behavior where it seems like random input events just start firing. I can’t tell if they are events that were backed up somewhere or just plain random events.
