Firmware for the ACME Corp Integrated webcam

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version:
Studio: 22.04

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
KDE Plasma

Problem Description:
Message to update the webcam Firmware

There is a message in the update center that started showing up to me saying that the webcam firmware is not updated to the latest version. But I am not sure if this is a legit update request.

Relevant System Information:
Include any details that might help (e.g., hardware, drivers, or special configurations).

Screenshots or Error Messages:

For multi-line text or logs, wrap them in triple backticks like this or highlight the text and use </> in the composer:

sudo dmesg | tail -20

What I’ve Tried:
I’ve tried to do some research about it but there is almost nothing about this out there.

I would like to know if this is legit, or not.

Thank you a lot!

Before Posting:
:mag: Please check if similar issues have already been reported and resolved.

The software center uses the fwupd tool as a backend for firmware updates, fwupd in turn uses firmware that vendors upload to the lvfs database on fwupd.org, IIRC there is a search function to dig for certain firmware

Along with the above you could check the page of the manufacturer of that webcam to see if the mentioned version of the firmware is listed there
your manufacturer seems to have a page for this at:

Thanks for the quick reply!

I found something here:

https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devices/org.fwupd.fakedevice.firmware

It seems to be the one.

Either you are having a joke on us. Or, someone is having a joke on you.

Flux capacitor? Time going backwards?

Google AI

A flux capacitor is the fictional, core component that makes time travel possible in the Back to the Future film franchise. Invented by Doc Brown, it is described as a device requiring 1.21 gigawatts of power—delivered at 88 mph—to function, typically visualized as a stainless steel box with three flashing lights in a Y-configuration.

In England it used to be a tradition to play jokes on people on April 1st. But only in the morning. Once midday had past the joke is on you. What is the date on your machine? April 1st 2025? Has time gone backwards for you?

Come off it. You are pulling our leg. Pull the other one . It has got bells on it.

That’s exactly why I found this update to make no sense.
Actually the problem still persists, I can’t either update this or remove it in the software center because it’s greyed out.
I also got this when trying to run the update:

@nuksy I believe you.

I am now going to make an uneducated guess. You are seeing a mock-up of what the design drawing of the firmware updater user interface would look like when turned in to code.

I am using the Gnome desktop environment. Firmware Updater does not look like that on my 24.04. In fact it does not do much or show much. It shows the touchpad but not the webcam or any bluetooth hardware.

I seem to remember an earlier version of Firmware Updater that showed more hardware devices than the utility does now.

I read that Firmware Updater was being re-written in the Rust programming language. What that has to do with anything, I do not know.

I had this idea of using the command line version to see what hardware is detected. It is a complicated tool.

Regards

@graymech doing some research with AI, I think I could solve the problem.
The output from the AI was:
The “ACME Corp Integrated Webcam” and the fakedevice124.cab file are intentional test components. They are used by developers to:

  1. Simulate a firmware update without needing real hardware

  2. Run automated tests in continuous integration systems

  3. Verify that the update process works correctly

‘‘ The error you saw (PathNotFoundException) happened because a test was looking for a file that had been cleaned up or was never fully installed – a common issue with development tools that aren’t meant for production use ‘‘

I basically was able to remove it.

Best regards

I need to point out that support for Ubuntu Studio 22.04 ended this past May and that in order to receive the support level you’re requesting, you must upgrade to Ubuntu Studio 24.04 LTS or 25.10.
