Failed To Install On Acer Aspire

Hello Fred.
I am a total digibete, but tried a few of your suggestions. I also typed (cd) instead of (hd0) and now I see the content of the DVD on the screen. So I installed nothing yet
So now the hardware is as follows:
An empty SSD, with 2 kernel programs on it,
and a DVD responding.
But I still have no idea how to get Ubuntu installed on the SSD

Thank you very much

Since you copied something to SSD, what format is partition and what partitioning gpt or old MBR(msdos). You want gpt. This should show drive.

sudo parted -l

How large is SSD?

If not large or multiple TB, better as new user just to let installer select partitions.
It will create an ESP - efi system partition (FAT32) for UEFI boot files and an ext4 partition for everything else. Only if drive is very large or if you have used a system for a while and have some idea of desired sizes then you can split / from /home or separate data partition(s).

Thank you for responding.
I realize that I did not format the new disk.
It is rather large.
When I typed ‘boot’ it said 'you need to load the kernel first ’
Still do not know how to load a kernel.

This is nothing you do yourself, but an internal feature of the installer and indicates corrupt install media usually …

Thank you, I’l try to get it done.

Questions are invariably simple, the answers are more difficult
I searched the topic but I have not seen your hardware details. Can you provide the info:-

  • Age of PC
  • Motherboard
  • Graphics
  • Processor
  • Disk

Did USB boot work previously?

No, the USB gates did not work at all.

looks like:

https://linux-hardware.org/?computer=81acee0f884a&latest

Which is a 2014 device. There seem to quite some known issues in getting the UEFI settings correct to make it detect the OS after installation (but i have not found any issues online about the installation itself, that usually seems to work fine from USB key), likely one of these early UEFI implementations that do not fully follow the standards …

Hardware is Acer Aspire 78. 2014. And by adjusting the BIOS I managed to get this far. But I just need a kernel loaded. And maybe the new SSD formatted.
Which is why I try to install Ubuntu.

For a PC from 2014 with non-functioning USB ports, I would try a lighter flavour - Lubuntu 24.04 or Xubuntu 24.04.

Well, in your initial post you say:

Now you claim

That is two completely different devices, which one exactly are you using ?

Again, this is nothing you can do manually and the error message means the bootloader on the install media can not find the media itself to move on with the installation. This usually happens if your media is corrupt or if the bootloader does not have support for that particular media, verify your iso to make sure what you downloaded is not currupt, make sure the media you install the iso on is big enough in size to carry the iso (writing a 5GB+ iso to a 4.7GB DVDRW will not work)

PS: what @tea-for-one said above might definitely help with a size issue, the Lubuntu or Xubuntu isos should be smaller than a standard Ubuntu one …

Xubuntu Desktop is 4.0GB

Xubuntu Noble Releases

There were some issues back then with versions of UEFI. First said had to downgrade, but then Acer did an update and the recommendation was to update UEFI firmware to latest available. You need to go to Acer’s support site for your model & see if they have an update for the firmware.
Especially if no “trust” setting in UEFI after install, you need UEFI firmware update.

Some, even new SSD also need firmware updates. My Samsung had updates on Samsung site.

Thank you for responding. I turned over the laptop, and it says Acer ES 2-721 series.
The DVD that I got Ubuntu on is about 8 GB. So I think that will be sufficient.
The internal SSD is 960 GB
So what to do next?

Must be Acer ES 1-711

Some more info, probably bit older or lower spec model -533 and install back in 2016, Should be same if not better supported, now in Ubuntu.

That post has them using USB flash drive. Maybe UEFI firmware update will resolve your issue. Systems with UEFI typically would boot from USB, but some hide it under hard drive, not a USB boot setting.

I’m still playing “Guess the Specification” and I think I’ve cracked it!

Intel Celeron N2940 @ 1.84 GHz
4GB RAM

Try Xubuntu 24.04 or Lubuntu 24.04

Where do I claim my prize?

Yes, very good point - especially if the user is unfamiliar with all the intricacies of UEFI options.

I’ve tried USB, but the system didn’t respond. DVD was the only option.

And I took picture of the label

And the only way to get this working was boot on legacy.
