Failed Boot One-time on Ubuntu Unity 26.04 (Educational Mission)

Problem Description:
Today when I booted into my computer, I entered my LUKS encryption password, unlocked successfully but hung on the splash screen with the text that my drive was decrypted successfully.

Had to shut down by force by pushing the power button on my laptop, booted up again, repeated process, and worked just fine.

I have not had this happen before.

Thus, I am trying to use this as a learning opportunity for myself as I do not understand the “journalctl” error messages and would like to just in case something happens again.

What I’ve Tried:
Powering off by force (pressing the power button on my laptop) and booting again. It worked.

Before Posting:
Please check if similar issues have already been reported and resolved.

I quickly checked but nothing similar popped up.

Kernel hit impossible condition (kernel BUG at ...). If it happened just once it could be memory glitch. You may consider running memory test for extending period of time (over night or even 24 hours).

The key error is the kernel crash:

kernel BUG at arch/x86/kernel/alternative.c:2564!

The other systemd and udev errors are probably side effects. Since the next boot worked, I’d monitor if it happens again. If it does, check the previous boot log with journalctl -b -1 -p warning and try booting an older kernel from GRUB to see if it’s kernel-related. A BIOS update may also help, especially on laptops.

Today, I had another weird “boot” issue. I restarted my laptop, and it sat on a black screen after shutting down but before booting up. It didn’t get to the “Acer” logo that pops up for a couple seconds before the prompt for my LUKS encryption password.

When I’ve tried other distros on this laptop, that “Acer” logo comes up every time before the GRUB screen (when GRUB menu is enabled). Since I left it as default (hidden) on Ubuntu Unity, GRUB Menu does not show up, but instead goes right to the LUKS encryption password prompt under normal behaviour.

After a force shutdown, I booted up normally again.

I have experienced some non-systematic strange boot behaviour on other LTS distros.

I will run a memory test when I have some time. I remember reading you can’t do it from the actual running OS, and I have a Linux Mint live USB as a “rescue disc” on hand just in case.

In your UEFI settings, do you have Fastboot enabled?

Disable Fastboot in your UEFI settings - may be more consistent when booting the PC?

Apologies for the delay in response – I was occupied personally the last couple days.

@itzswirlz I am on the latest kernel for Ubuntu 26.04 as of Sunday, 19 July 2026 (v. 7.0.0.28-generic). It happened here and when I tried Rocky Linux 8 (v. 4.18), Rocky Linux 9 (v. 5.14) and Linux Mint a couple years ago (v. 5.15).

@tea-for-one Ok I will disable Fastboot and see what happens after a few boots.

I just wanted to follow up.

I turned off Fastboot and so far so good. The boot up has improved and I have not had any issues so far.
