External USB no longer recognized (after update?)

Ubuntu Version:
22.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME

Problem Description:
I noticed today that the external USB drive I use to share files with other PCs on my network using samba is no longer showing up on the host system. I’m not 100% sure it caused it, but I did update the system sometime in the last week - I think last Thursday. I was accessing the drive from another machine as recently as last Tuesday.

I see this in dmesg, but not sure if it is the problem or what it means:

What I’ve Tried

Restarting. Checking in Disks (it no longer appears at all in there).

Please use code blocks (</>) around all log output, ideally wrapped in a “Hide Details” element. See items 4 and 5 here.

Optional WIP helper

If you are so inclined, I took it upon myself to provide a little helper script for that.

As to the issue, it may be coincidental, because a reboot was probably required after said update. That’s usually when hard disks die: trying and failing to power on. But there may be other causes. Can you test with the live installer in “Try Ubuntu” mode? That should not include said update and give you a way to try and access the USB drive from that clean environment.

thanks! I think I fixed the text (editing from mobile, so hopefully that worked).

I’ll give this a shot!

Are you running the latest HWE kernel? Is the external drive NTFS?

It showed up again after moving to a different USB port (reinserting into the same one did nothing). It’s a headless machine in my basement so hopefully that’s a rare occasion. Is getting a bit crusty (the machine, not the drive) - so I’ll chalk it up to that for now.
