Abstract

What if someone asks you. “Hey, wanna play video games in Space?” You of course say yes, and this is the story of that project.

We will cover why DOOM was selected, the technical issues encountered, the logistical problems and the results of the project itself.

Speaker bio

Ólafur Waage is a Principal Software Developer. Previously he worked for many years in the gaming and air traffic control industries. His work focuses mainly on programming with C++, Go and TypeScript. In his spare time he unsurprisingly likes video games and puzzles but he also enjoys non-fiction audio books and it would be a very strange day if it were not filled with music in some way.

if it runs in space, it runs anywhere! Who do we talk to if we want Doom competitions between all our smart devices at home? Do we have a leaderboard?

Can we get a speedrunning category for DOOM in space?

If you could port another game to a satellite, which one would you try next?

Did we have any space hardware specific changes required in DOOM, maybe some opcode doesnt run great?
