Diagnosing the crash on my laptop

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version:
22.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME

Problem Description:
I had an issue where I have typed my password to login and the screen became completely black without any underscore and my laptop’s F6 button became red, I couldn’t do anything so I did a force reboot with the power button. My laptop have been working for years with this version of Ubuntu so the crash only happened once. I have a rough timeline written down when it happened and I looked through logs via nano in /var/log/syslog , /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/dmesg as well as using this command journalctl -b -1.

There are too many things happening in the logs and I’m confused for what to look out for and also where, so does anyone know how I can locate the section in the logs where I typed in my password to check for any errors that happened after that specific action took place after I pressed enter ?

Also, I managed to find this error but not sure if it was cause of the issue or it was before\after I typed in my password:

: kernel: [ 0.000000] x86/split lock detection: #AC: crashing the kernel on kernel split_locks and warning on user-space split_locks

I also looked through the logs in my laptop for the previous days and I don’t see this error anywhere in the logs so I presume this might be the culprit. My goal here is to diagnose why my laptop crashed or if something more neferious happened in the background that cause it to crash.

Thanks

If you managed to review your logs, does this mean that you successfully booted after your crash?

Hi Ian,

Yes, after a reboot took place Ubuntu started as normal. I’m trying to establish why the crash has took place.

Any idea why the crash happened or what I can look for next ?

Sometimes crashes happen. It could be so many different reasons, even just that the computer had a hiccup.

Over the many years that I’ve been working with Linux, Windows, Unix, and other systems, they all just have a hiccup every so often.

If everything is working, and it was just the one-off, I would ignore it and let it go.
