Dell Inspiron 3793 Boot problem after ditching Windows 10 : loading Lubuntu

Ubuntu Version

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Flavors

Desktop Environment (if applicable)

Other

Problem Description

Before Boot Repair tool fix : fairly consistently presenting GRUB command line - needing exit cmd to progress to Lubuntu bootup.
After Boot Repair tool fix : sometimes GRUB command line : sometimes GRUB selection menu . . . proceeding to Lubuntu bootup.

From the Fix report I noticed this

Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
grub-install: warning: EFI variables cannot be set on this system.
grub-install: warning: You will have to complete the GRUB setup manually. <<<<<<

Previous owner (no Linux) of this computer tried to load Linux Mint, but ran into problems with BitLocker. He then used A.I. assistance to work his way through to ditching the Windows10 and installing Mint.
The Mint bootup behaved in the same random way to my install/overwrite with Lubuntu.

Ideally I would like to boot directly into Lubuntu, as a single O/S, without delay : without GRUB interruption.

Boot Repair tool output files available : Diagnostic & Auto-repair.

Suggested repair: ______________________________________________________________

The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would reinstall the grub-efi of
nvme0n1p2,
using the following options:  nvme0n1p1/boot/efi
Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s use-standard-efi-file

Final advice in case of suggested repair: ______________________________________

Please do not forget to make your UEFI firmware boot on the Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS entry (nvme0n1p1/efi/****/grub****.efi (**** will be updated in the final message) file) !

Try this to start. Move Ubuntu to the top of the UEFI boot sequence. Save the BIOS changes and reboot with the Boot-Repair USB removed (important). Thanks

If it works then run this please:

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

BIOS boot sequence : 1) Ubuntu 2) UEFI xxxxxxx NvMe something . . . . I don’t know what this one does.

Yes I can nano into /etc/default/grub.

Thanks

Great!
If you see this :
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
Do this :
sudo update-grub
Thanks

One last thing you could do after maybe is
sudo efibootmgr -o 0005,0000

And by the way welcome to the Ubuntu Discourse Community!

efibootmgr : current status

$ sudo efibootmgr
[sudo: authenticate] Password:
BootCurrent: 0005
Timeout: 0 seconds
BootOrder: 0005,0000
Boot0000* UEFI KBG40ZNS128G NVMe KIOXIA 128GB 80EPH4WGQ2B1 1 PciRoot(0x0)/Pci(0x1d,0x4)/Pci(0x0,0x0)/NVMe(0x1,8C-E3-8E-04-01-04-7B-5D)/HD(1,GPT,8738b9e1-ffb5-4797-9877-bb915e2f5bc8,0x1000,0x96000)/\EFI\Boot\BootX64.efi{auto_created_boot_option}
Boot0005* Ubuntu HD(1,GPT,8738b9e1-ffb5-4797-9877-bb915e2f5bc8,0x1000,0x96000)/\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi

In this
sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Look for
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

Then change it to
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

Do not touch the rest, please.

Then
sudo update-grub

And finally
sudo reboot

You should be good after that.

Thanks for this solution.

i.e. straight into Lubuntu : no GRUB menu : no GRUB command line.

Two test reboots : All OK
