Sorry for the slight delay on responding here, I wanted to have some conversations internally to confirm my thoughts before posting publicly.
We’re happy to hand over this project to the community if there are people who wish to maintain it and push it forward.
My preferred course of action is to transfer it from canonical/lightdm on GitHub, to ubuntu/lightdm on GitHub, giving any potential maintainers Maintain permissions, which should be plenty for the running of the project.
We don’t need to keep the Canonical CLA in place if that becomes a barrier.
@utkarsh is ready to assist with transferring the repo as and when.
That proposal would definitely keep it under the Ubuntu umbrella … ensuring greater acceptance from the public … and attract more support from developpers … than if it was set free to the vagaries of the independent FOSS world.
I am Alfred from the UBports crew and wanted to create a link to lightdm because we ship it with an important patch keeping lomiri-system-compositor features intact/unremoved.
If there’s an interest I want to chime in. My GitHub username is fredldotme.
