At this point it is essentially unmaintained. I was previously trying to review and land PRs, but since I’m not using it in any projects and am not aware of any Canonical projects using it I have ceased to be an effective maintainer as I don’t want to land anything that will break existing users. I had hoped that someone might come forward who wanted to maintain it but I haven’t seen any interest (though I have also not actively tried to encourage this).
What I suggest going forward:
If anyone in the community is interested in maintaining it then please have a go! Since it is a shared resource someone who is both capable and can meet the requirements of the whole community is important - I don’t think I’m capable of judging that and there’s not a pool of contributors to select from so some sort of consensus would be useful there. Thanks for your offer of help here @Conan_Kudo - you are the obvious person I would be considering here for advice.
Since the code is owned by Canonical, there would need to be a discussion about transferring that if this becomes a complete community project. I don’t think this would be a major problem but just would take some time to organize. I’m happy to facilitate that. I would recommend that the project continues to be the official upstream rather than a fork as this generally seems to be more successful in keeping a project alive.
I don’t think this would be too hard a project to maintain and I would suggest any future maintainers take a conservative approach. There are some features that are no longer required and can probably be removed to reduce maintenance. Only add features that are required to keep useful. In terms of software lifecycle LightDM is in the twilight of its life - there’s years of useful benefit there if managed appropriately but also keep an eye out for next generation tools built with better technologies. Switch early if you are willing to bear the costs and the risk of picking the wrong project or wait it out with LightDM until the next tool becomes the obvious choice!
