I just got a surprise warning:

root@OasisMega1:~# cupsd -t
Printer drivers are deprecated and will stop working in a future version of CUPS. See https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/issues/103
"/etc/cups/cups-files.conf" is OK.
"/etc/cups/cupsd.conf" is OK.
root@OasisMega1:~#

Canon UFR-II based printers will NOT print without a Canon-supplied proprietary printer driver.

Does anyone know if there is an emerging substitute for CUPS that will support Manufacturer drivers for printers?

Canon printers all support IPP and AirPrint which are the basis for the new CUPS driverless printing so I’m surprised you claim they can not work with it …
