If I understand correctly, xscreensaver is not supported by the most recent versions of Ubuntu. So I’ve tried various suggestions found online to run cmatrix as a screensaver, using various installations and commands but I can’t get it to work (though cmatrix itself will run if prompted). Anyone have an idiot-proof set of instructions? Not sure why I care but I’m frustrated at the many failed attempts.

You can use tmux to set a timeout. When the timeout is reached, tmux can automatically launch cmatrix.
The idle command in tmux can be configured to run a command (like cmatrix) after a certain amount of time.
Thanks, but I don’t know what “tumux” is or how to use it. Is there any documentation that would accomplish this through step by step?
Maybe consider the option presented in the following post:
