Ubuntu Support Template
Ubuntu Version :
Example: 24.04
Desktop Environment (if applicable) :
Mate
Problem Description :
Cannot load nvidia driver 535
535 is not compatible with kernel 7(I knew this) last upgrade created the newer version of 535 which somehow depends upon version 580.
I want to downgrade 535
revert to only kernel 6.8
never again try to use the unbuntu updater, as it thinks is know my hardware better than I do.
Need to completely remove all traces of kernel 7.0
install nvidia 535
use 535 as video driver

This one is horribly wrong and will result in a system that never properly upgrades the kernel, you never ever want to install linux-image-generic directly, that makes you miss the top level meta package which manages the kernel upgrades, what you want instead is:
sudo apt install linux-generic
That will pull in all of the -image, -headers and -modules packages that are needed for proper operation and will take care that they are always properly upgraded in sync

Thanks, perhaps notify the author of the blog (I assume many people might get there via a google search or chatbot)

I dunno. Google’s ai seems to think the 580 driver will work. Plus, it will work with the 7.0 kernel.

Let’s please avoid any AI guessing.
Our guidelines are clear:
If you copy AI without testing it , then it’s not your knowledge. It’s a guess. Guesses, even good ones, are not helpful to folks seeking knowledgeable help.
If you take an AI answer, test it, and it works, then it’s not a guess. It’s a real answer based on human experience and knowledge. Those we welcome.

Dear All,
Thanks for the input. I shall try everything, and appreciate the help
The information is correct as in confirmed by Nvida themselves. Just now searched for the recommended driver for a GTX750 while trying to help another user here and it showed 580.

The following is a sdiff between the Appendix A section of the extracted /usr/share/doc/nvidia-driver-535/README.txt.gz (nvidia-driver-535_535.309.01-0ubuntu0.24.04.1_amd64.deb) and the Appendix A section of the extracted /usr/share/doc/nvidia-driver-580/README.txt.gz (nvidia-driver-580_580.173.02-0ubuntu0.24.04.1_amd64.deb) Appendix A is the list of supported Nvidia GPU for that driver.

But I’m just guessing the information in the Nvidia supplied README files are factual. I hope they are.

The Ubuntu wiki explains how to switch from HWE to GA kernel. It does not cover 24.04 specifically so you will need to adjust the 20.04 example for the 24.04 versions.
