Change settings from Ubuntu Studio lowlatency kernel to generic kernel

Ubuntu Version

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable)

GNOME

Problem Description

I recently upgraded from 24.04 LTS to 26.04 LTS, and I have Ubuntu Studio packages installed for my music projects. I have been following the discussion about deprecating the separate lowlatency kernel in favor of dynamic lowlatency switching within the generic kernel, but I’m a little confused because my default kernel remains 6.8.0-142-lowlatency even though I have linux-image-7.0.0-34-generic installed, as well.

My questions:

  • Will the older 6.8 kernel be phased out automatically as the Ubuntu Studio packages are updated, or can I/should I switch to the generic kernel manually? If the latter, what’s the easiest way to do that? Unchecking the lowlatency-settings box in Ubuntu Studio Installer doesn’t achieve that.
  • How does one enter lowlatency mode on the new generic kernel?

The 6.8 kernel is not supported on 26.04. You should start using the 7.0 kernel.

That’s correct. You’ll do it manually by uninstalling linux-lowlatency.

Awesome, this is very helpful. Thanks for the quick response

For others following along, I had to sudo apt remove linux-image-6.8.0-142-lowlatency
