Can't load GDM

Ubuntu Version:
24.04

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
I’m not sure.. the default one.

Problem Description:
I can’t load the GUI on startup.

It was something I did, because it was working fine until I tried messing with the python config in order to install the electrum wallet.

Now I made it worse, and it just stays stuck on the Lenovo screen (after decrypting)

Relevant System Information:
Thinkpad T490s, encrypted drive

Screenshots or Error Messages:
on_display_added: assertion ‘GDM_IS_REMOTE_DISPLAY (display)’ failed

What I’ve Tried:
• nomodeset

• lightdm

• boot from live USB

• pray to the Holy Server

So, lesson learned, hopefully: Messing with Python has consequences.

Now, although it may be possible to correct what you did wrong, it’s impossible to help you with that with only the info you provided.

It takes much less time and effort to simply reinstall Ubuntu. When doing that also consider a newer LTS - 24.04 - or the current 25.10, both can be easily release upgraded to the next LTS 26.04 due to be released in April.

Python is an integral part of the Ubuntu plumbing system.

This is, without doubt, the solution.

Don’t forget to back up your data before re-installation.

Thanks for the reply. Well I just did what Claude told me to do. So another lesson learned: don’t use Claude to guide you. What is the best chatbot for this kind of stuff? Or is it better to avoid them altogether?

@scuila Welcome to Ubuntu Discourse

Although I generally don’t do this, I am going to quote from something I posted recently:

The answer to your question is to ask here first before you use code from an LLM, any LLM.

We are more than happy to help you review and guide you in the right direction.
