Hello, I recently (ok, a few days ago) switched from Ubuntu MATE to Xubuntu, and now there’s a new release coming up next month. Given how simple, old-timey, and generally back-to-the-basics Xubuntu is, I wonder: when there’s a new release, can you do an upgrade to the new release from the existing Xubuntu installation, or do you have to reinstall?
You can do an online release upgrade if coming from the current LTS - 24.04 - or the current interim release - 25.10 -. Please note the first number refers to the years (2024, 2025) and the second to months (April and October).
The Ubuntu-release-upgrader program works on your base Ubuntu install, and upgrades that, including whatever packages you have installed on your system.
The flavor you’re running mostly impacts the packages you have installed; so a Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, or Xubuntu install will all upgrade the same way.
Always read the release notes of the release you want to upgrade to (and note any instructions that may apply to what you have installed), and then follow the instructions on the actual upgrade you’re going to run; many flavors do include their own instruction, but many do not.
eg. Xubuntu has a small note mentioned in the last 25.10 or questing upgrade page - QuestingUpgrades - Community Help Wiki and link to their own instructions.
