Blank screen after "Try or Install Ubuntu"

It goes blank in the safe graphics mode.

I’ve tried Ubuntu desktop (24.04.1 and 22.04.5), Lubuntu and Mint Cinnamon with the same results. Windows 10 installs. I can also get into command prompt from grub but I don’t know what to do there.

The motherboard was pulled from a working computer, memory passes memtest.

If anyone could provide troubleshooting I would appreciate it!

There’s no graphics card by the way, just using the motherboard.

Welcome to Ubuntu Discourse

Have you tried Ubuntu Server editions?

If you are able to make progress that way you could always install a GUI desktop later.

Another option to try: when you see the line Try or Install Ubuntu as you boot the USB, then press e to edit and find the line that says quiet splash. Add nomodeset after it then either Ctrl+X or usually F10 to continue the boot process.

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
Slight change after messing with bios, instead of a blank screen I get a blinking curser.

Adding nomodeset (linux /casper/vmlinuz — quiet splash nomodeset) gets me to a screen that says “Booting a command list” then a blinking curser. No progress after that.

Ubuntu Server does the same thing.

Check the SATA settings in BIOS, you need to make sure it is set to AHCI.

As above, when I suggested editing the boot line: try also with nomodeset and also acpi=off as well as noapic

Either separately or together but I usually suggest trying each one to see what works or doesn’t.

For example, linux /casper/vmlinuz ... quiet splash nomodeset acpi=off

I would also drop back and try an earlier version: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Maybe that will be more compatible with your hardware; worth trying I think.

I think it worked.

I think the blank screen comes when I turn compatibility mode off, curser is with it on. Maybe isn’t relevant at all. I did the following with compatibility mode off

Also did this with Ubuntu 20.04.6

OK, so in my storage configuration I have:
SATA controller - Enabled
Sata Mode - AHCI
Sata agressive link power management - disabled
Hard Disk s.m.a.r.t. - enabled
ASmedia SATA3 mode - AHCI

acpi=off led to the same, booting a command list then blinking curser
noapic same as above
nomodeset acpi=off got me to an install screen!

Still not there though, it ended with “executing ‘grub-install /dev/sda’ failed. This is a fatal error” After that error I also got a message saying the installation was complete.

I turned on compatiability in my motherboard settings and everything is working now, thanks for all the help!

Excellent news, glad you got it sorted out.

Please help others by indicating that the problem is solved.

I am new to Discourse but I believe you can choose the post that comes closest to the answer and mark it as the solution.

I think I got it, thanks!
