Black screen after waking from sleep

Ubuntu Version

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable)

GNOME

Problem Description

About 10% of the time, when the computer wakes from sleep, the monitor stays black. I cannot tell if the desktop is still working or it is frozen.

Relevant System Information

Gigabyte Z690 UD AX DDR4 mainboard, firmware F31
32GB of DDR RAM
12th gen Intel Core i9-12900K CPU
NVidia RTX 3060 12GB video card
LG 43QNED75URA 4K TV for display

Error Messages / Logs

Not sure where I should be looking for logs after this happens.

What I’ve Tried

Ctrl-Alt-T, then blindly type “sudo reboot now”. This does not appear to work, or something is preventing it from working. Terminal may not even be opening.

Ctrl-Alt-SysReq B to reboot the system works.

I have the same problem as you, although it’s rarer than 10%. It’s more like once every month.

The link that @the-pezman gave is specifically for NVIDIA, but mine is all-Intel, so I don’t know if they’re related.

Use REISUB to tell if the entire kernel has frozen or not. To do this, the first step is to find out what the SysRq key is on your keyboard. For Windows keyboards, it’s usually Alt+Print-Screen.

To check if you have it right, log out of your session so that all data is saved. Then press SysRq+B. What I mean by this is:

  1. Press Alt
  2. Keep it pressed, and press Print-Screen
  3. Keep them both pressed, and press B

If you got it right, your computer will immediately restart. If you got it wrong, you’ll have to figure out what your SysRq button is.

That’s how you can check what the SysRq button is.

Next time your computer freezes, use REISUB (it’s spelled BUSIER backwards, to help you remember). It works like this:

  1. Press SysRq+R. This enters “raw” mode, which gives you full control of your keyboard.
  2. Press SysRq+E. This tells the operating system to ask, in a nice way, all open apps to close. Wait a few seconds to give them time to close.
  3. Press SysRq+I. This tells the operating system to force non-responsive apps to close.
  4. Press SysRq+S. This tells the system to synchronise, i.e. flush all outstanding buffers to disk.
  5. Press SysRq+U. This tells the system to remount the disk in read-only mode to prevent corruption.
  6. Press SysRq+B. This tells the system to reboot immediately.

If the operating system itself has frozen, nothing will happen, and you’ll have to do a hard power-down. If the operating system is still working, the computer will reboot.

journalctl -b -1 -g "nvidia|drm|modeset|suspend|resume"

Thanks! I will keep this in mind. It’s quite annoying when the system doesn’t wake up. I honestly don’t know if it’s the PC or the display. I will keep this thread updated as I find stuff.

At the moment, I’ve added “exit 0” to the beginning of nvidia-sleep.sh, as was mentioned in the other post. Now I just need to see if it still has the issue.
