B43-phy0 error boot from usb, no bootmenu, no working wifi

Hello I’m not new to ubuntu (use it from feisty fawn) but i’m not like you wizards :D, just a very happy simple ubuntu-user (thanks to your really nice community! thank you!!)

  • What goal are you trying to achieve?*
    To boot from usb

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Problem Description:

I tried installing ubuntu on a computer that has windows (no need to keep anything, it’s still empty, bought it in a second hand oxfam shop)
and got an error message first: ‘b43-phy0 error’
It advised me to go to a website with drivers, but I’m not sure what I need to do there

After a minute or so, it did give me the installation page anyway, and it did say installation was successful (a complete install (no dual boot, windows was previously installed)

Now the computer won’t start up, says there is no bootmenu, and no operating system
and on the live usb, the wifi won’t work (none detected it says)

Relevant System Information:
hp pro-book 640G1
previously windows install (by oxfam)

Screenshots or Error Messages:

b43-phy0 error right before the ubuntu 24.04 install
at startup , hp-message saying there is no operating system and no boot menu

What I’ve Tried:

I think my problem is more like this post [Bootloader (grub) Lost After Ubuntu Upgrade on Dual Boot],
but I have no working internet, not sure if that is related to my problem, so can’t install or upgrade or use boot repair

I have checked with live usb with Gparted, it says there is a Grub partition, but can’t use bootrepair from the live cd cause wifi is not detected

(a) Power on PC, immediately tap F10 to access UEFI settings > System Configuration > Boot Options
What do you see?

(b) HP pro-book 640G1 is oldish (approx 2013), a lighter flavour within the Ubuntu family would be more suitable e.g. Xubuntu or Lubuntu?

(c) The b43-phy0 error is referring to the wifi. Your PC probably has a Broadcom device.
More details needed.
If you have a smartphone, you can use USB tethering
