Apps GUI messed up

Ubuntu Version:
Example: 24.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
GNOME

Problem Description:
The user interface for some apps, notably xsane and a couple of apps I wrote myself in python, got messed up out of the blue. Text and input fields are misplaced, etc., and some are invisible. Also, the xmessage app produces messages so tiny I can hardly see them. Everything was fine a month or less ago, and I can’t think of anything I might have done to cause this.

Hi, To help narrow this down, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact Ubuntu version (e.g., 24.04 LTS) and whether it’s fully updated
  • Whether you’re using Xorg or Wayland
  • Your display resolution and scaling settings (including fractional scaling, if enabled)
  • GPU model and driver in use
  • Output of: echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE and echo $GDK_SCALE
  • Whether the issue affects only GTK apps (like xsane) or also Qt/other apps
  • Any recent changes (themes, fonts, HiDPI settings, graphics drivers, etc.)

Screenshots (if possible) would also help.

After I posted, I switched the desktop from ubuntu-xorg to ubuntu and it looks like all is well. Thanks for responding. I tried to follow-up on my post but couldn’t figure out how to do it.

Thanks for the update, that’s helpful to know.
Interesting that switching from ubuntu-xorg to ubuntu fixed it for you — this might help others facing a similar issue.
Glad it’s working now!
