I am applying because:

  • I’d like to eliminate delays in getting our OEM team work sponsored.

  • I’d like to reduce the burden on my sponsors.

  • I’d like to be able to sponsor work of others.

Who I am

I’m Bin Li, based in Beijing. My Linux/Unix journey began in 2004 with OpenBSD at my first job; since then, my experience has evolved through openSUSE and Ubuntu to my current focus on NixOS. Beyond work, I am deeply passionate about open-source technologies and enjoy exploring various areas of system engineering. I also volunteered as a host for the Beijing GNOME User Group(www.bjgug.org), where I helped advocate for GNOME and open-source software.

My Ubuntu story

In 2013 I joined Canonical, and worked for OEM team to help improve the stabilty of Ubuntu on new hardware. Since then, I’ve been working on a wide range of issues including fingerprint, touchpad, audio/sound, power management, camera(MIPI) and occasional kernel-level debugging.

Examples of my work / Things I’m proud of

Areas of work

I worked for OEM Enablement team, my main role involves ensuring new laptop models are fully compatible with Ubuntu. Most issues our team faced are Audio/Sound, Bluetooth/Wireless, Display/Graphics, Camera(MIPI or USB), Keyboard/LED, Touchpad, Touchscreen, Fingerprint, Suspend/Resume & Power Management, etc. I woud like add lenovo-wwan-unlock into multiverse to support 5G modems on ThinkPad.

Worked closely with OEM QA Team, PjM team, Foundation team and SRU team.

Things I could do better

Sometimes I have multiple bugs in progress at the same time, and lower priority issues can remain untouched for longer than I would like while I focus on more urgent customer problems. I am working on better prioritization and making incremental progress on all my open items.

I think I could be more active on public community channels. Most of my communication happens through internal channels, and I would like to maintain a stronger presence on IRC and Matrix to engage more with the broader Ubuntu community.

Plans for the future

General

I plan to continue the maintenance and triage of the packages for which I have applied for PPU privileges. Additionally, I aim to support more new hardware on Ubuntu as part of my daily work. I am confident that having PPU privileges will significantly improve the efficiency of our team’s contributions to the Ubuntu community

What I like least in Ubuntu

One of the main challenges I see in Ubuntu is the current turnaround time for uploads. To address this, we need more uploaders and SRU reviewers so that we can manage the pending queue more promptly and consistently.
