I have been involved at various points in time with Ubuntu at the “more than just a user” level, back when Unity7 had some usability and security issues right before the 16.04 14.04 LTS window closed and I was still at school, switching over to the continuation of the Ubuntu Phone alias Ubuntu Touch. I have been porting selfishly to my own personal device, then contributing, dogfooding, daily-driving and promoting it over the course of the last 8 years.

At the bi-weekly Ubuntu Touch Q&A I inform interested folks and regular users about new contributions landing as well as answering questions revolving around the project and the community.

Professionally, wherever I was employed full-time I established a FLOSS-respecting environment, starting with proper re-releases of customly patched dependencies whenever the need arose for license compliance, as well as building on the foundations of Ubuntu as the basis for a lot of IoT types of devices. Since 2025 I am employed to work on Ubuntu Touch full time.

Contributions

  • Unity7: The desktop was exposing window contents when multi-finger swiping them to appear, even through the lockscreen. Also graphics weren’t in tune, like the Launcher popping up abruptly instead of sliding in smoothly. All fixed. :slight_smile:
  • Work on the Lomiri (ex-Unity8) desktop environment
  • System-wide NFC support, including security work and development experience
  • Providing contributor experience via the Platform Development Kit
  • Wireless Desktop Mode off a phone or tablet using Aethercast
  • Camera viewfinder mapping into apps through qtubuntu-camera
  • Highly performant default QR Code reader app
  • Playback of remote HTTP(S) content in apps via media-hub & qtubuntu-media
  • Sweetspot between power-saving and performance
  • Forward-porting and polishing camera support in QtWebEngine
  • Multimedia handling in QtWebEngine using Halium OMX facilities
  • Smooth trackpad scrolling in the qtubuntu/ubuntumirclient Qt Platform Abstraction
  • Graphics subsystem improvements for running on Android hardware
  • Bringing Linux Snap support to more devices
  • Implementing fscrypt file system encryption for /home data
  • Various apps released in the officially supported distribution channels on Ubuntu Touch, the Open Store and the Snapcraft Store

Future goals

I want to strengthen the attractiveness of Ubuntu Touch, Lomiri and other pieces it’s made of among our wider FLOSS audience as well as bring outsiders closer with the ideas and philosophy of Ubuntu. No matter the form factor: phone, tablet, laptop,… :slight_smile:

I don’t think I’ve worked with Alfred in a technical capacity, but we’ve met at various Ubuntu events, and he made a lasting impression on me. He was incredibly authentic and passionate, and welcomed my wife with open arms into the community, even though she had very little prior knowledge about what even an OS was.

I can’t speak to his technical contributions, but he definitely made our community a better place by being a great ambassador.

Alfred’s work around Ubuntu Touch is really remarkable and you can see it in the increased usage and media coverage the project is getting. Just in the past year, I’ve seen multiple content creators outside of our community discuss their frustration with the phone OS duopoly and the joy they felt discovering Touch. The project is a great hidden gem of our broader community and we have Alfred, among other great community members, to thank for it.

I’d also like to mention my experience meeting and working briefly with Alfred. In my interactions, he’s always been exceptionally kind, passionate and eager to share his knowledge. A few years ago, he reached out to share his work on getting Snaps working on Touch and we worked together on getting it posted on the official Snapcraft blog: Creating Snaps on Ubuntu Touch | Snapcraft

I’m very happy to see his name come across the Membership Board’s docket! :slight_smile:

Hello, I do not see you on the schedule for your meeting day and time, have you stated somewhere when you want to have your membership meeting?

Not yet, is there any preference in time and date? I can make time available whenever.

Hello beidl - great that you are stepping up.

For a meeting time preference, those of us here in the West would prefer a Thursday time. Wednesdays we must arise at Oh! Dark Hundred to make the meeting. Maybe our alarms do not awaken us in time.
