After upgrade from 25.04 to 25.10, gdm will "start" but it won't switch to any sort of graphical display

25.04 was working perfectly - and then I upgraded the (expendable) machine to beta test 25.10 and … the graphical login won’t work at all.

gdm will start, but I see no graphical activity AT ALL. No flickering, nothing.

The only log line which might be of interest is:

gdm-launch-environment] [3328]: pam_unix(gdm-launch-environment:account): could not identify user (from getpwname(gdm-greeter))

I need guidance on how to actually find out where the issue lies. gdm3 is supposed to start… wayland I guess? Is there any way of manually testing the components involved (wayland?)

That reads like a support request?; this is a pre-release discussion area, which is for

Do you think this is a release-upgrade issue that needs more testing? as question was more support oriented, which isn’t the purpose of this area.

I read this slightly differently.
To me it sounds like valuable feedback on the pre-release, that if not fixed could affect other users.
The OP is unable to provide a fix for the potential pre-release bug without further guidance on how to troubleshoot.

I have the same issue after upgrading to 25.10.
No graphical login and only error message:
pam_unix(gdm-launch-environment:account): could not identify user (from getpwnam(gdm-greeter))

A post was split to a new topic: Problems With Graphical Login 25.10

To all users:

25.10 is no longer in development but final release.

Please post your support topics in Support and Help if you are experiencing these types of issues.

Thanks
