After reformatting USB drive Thunar doesn't see it at all

Ubuntu Support Template

Ubuntu Version:
Example: 22.04.3 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable):
Example: XFCE

Problem Description:
I’ve bought ADATA UV320/512GB USB drive. I initiated backing up all my files there. For more than 12 hours, everything worked fine (it was done via Thunar 4.18.8). The file system originally set was Fat32. After finishing backing up I unplugged the USB drive and after some time plugged it in again.

While scrolling through my backed up files on the USB I noticed some of them started getting read-only (lock icon started appearing randomly). And then… boom… I can’t even create a folder on my drive with all my files being copyied there.

I tried to use Gparted to reformat it like this:

  • Devide > Create partition table > msdos
  • Format to > ext4

It seemed to work. After
After what USB drive became unrecognizable by my laptop. Gparted doesn’t see it. When I run sudo dmesg I get this:

sudo dmesg | tail -20

What I’ve Tried:
I tried to re-plug my USB device again, and it failed: it didn’t help.

Notes

Have I done something wrong during reformatting? Why the USB drive which allowed to put files there becaume at first read-only and then after formatting unrecognizable?

What is the output of:
sudo fdisk -l
with the USB inserted?

There it is.

It’s visible to dmesg but it wasn’t visible to fdisk

Worth a double check with another command?

Power off your PC
Power on
Attach the Adata USB disk
Open a terminal and enter

lsblk -e 7

Alternatively

sudo parted -l

Either command will omit all the extraneous /dev/loop devices and should only show disks (both internal and usb)

It produced the following output (after reboot):

~> lsblk -e 7
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
sda 8:0 0 931.5G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 1G 0 part /boot/efi
└─sda2 8:2 0 930.5G 0 part /
sdb 8:16 1 462.5G 0 disk
└─sdb1 8:17 1 462.5G 0 part

While when I attempted to click on the visible USB name in Thunar it failed and reported that it failed to mount it (as operation was already pending). Pressing Ok and doing it a second time made the USB dissapear. Gparted still doesn’t see it. Is there any way to make this drive usable?

Yet another command sudo parted -l (after unplugging and plugging the USB back) produced this:

Model: ATA ST1000LM035-1RK1 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 1000GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B

 2 1128MB 1000GB 999GB ext4

Model: ADATA USB Flash Drive (scsi)
Disk /dev/sdb: 497GB

Disk Flags:

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
 1 1049kB 497GB 497GB primary ext4

An attempt to just rerun this command in a minute approximately gives a different output (USB is still in the port):

Model: ATA ST1000LM035-1RK1 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 1000GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B

My girlfriend bought this USB to me for more than 3K rubles… and yet… it’s not a USB to make backups but to train troubleshooting on it ig.

Your Adata disk is recognised by parted and lsblk but not by gparted.
Let’s see if it can be fixed by parted using the terminal?

Power on and boot normally
Attach the Adata USB
Open a terminal

Start partition manager (command line)

sudo parted

List disks

print devices

Nominate target disk - hopefully still sdb
Your USB was previously sdb but these can change, therefore, be careful

select /dev/sdb

Create partition table

mklabel gpt

Exit parted

q

Open gparted > Select sdb > View > Device Information

Any good?

It hangs out (video recorded) until Adata disks becomes invisible from what I see. I plug in my USB right before entering sudo parted. How to understand whether it’s a hardware failure (USB one) or it was formatted/partitioned incorrectly? Is there any chance this USB can be recovered?

Yes, I see - disappointing indeed

How to understand whether it’s a hardware failure (USB one)

It could be a faulty disk?

Is there any chance this USB can be recovered?

I’m trying

Adata disk attached (still sdb)
Open a terminal

sudo gdisk /dev/sdb

Verify disk

v

Next, create a new empty GUID partition table (GPT)

o

Print the partition table

p

Exit

q

Is it visible in Gparted?

When the drive disappears, any related messages in journalctl -b output from around that time?
(journalctl -b displays in a pager by default, use arrow keys or PageUp/PageDown to navigate and q to quit)

What type of USB port are you plugging the drive into (USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.0, USB 2.0,…)?
Does the drive work in a different USB port? Does your computer have a different type of USB port you can plug the drive into?

In the future, if you want to run the fdisk command and not have all those loop entries which are useless in this case, use the command below which will not include loop entries:

sudo fdisk -l | sed -e '/Disk \/dev\/loop/,+5d'

Also, it isn’t clear from your initial post what you did as you say you copied data and then removed the usb device. You also mention the device was formatted as vfat but don’t say why. Not a good filesystem to use with Linux so had you formatted the device to ext4 prior to copying the data? Unless you are using a proprietary microsoft windows OS, there is no reason to use their proprietary filesystems and if you are sharing data between windows and Linux, you are generally better off copying to/from windows filesystem partitions using windows and Linux filesystem/partitions using Linux.

Did you unmount the usb and select to safely remove it before removing the device from the port? Always a good idea.

Why do you have an msdos partition table on the problems device when the other is using the more modern gpt? Doubt that is the source of your problem. Did you run a filesystem check on the device (sdb1) using fsck?
