On 17 March 2026, @leiaru1 and I gave a talk on our accessibility journey at FOSS Backstage, in Berlin. We wanted to share our accessibility journey and offer our insights to the open source community. It can sometimes feel as though people need to be experts in accessibility before they can build more inclusive products. However, we believe the best way to improve is to start small, share knowledge, and continuously iterate.
And in the spirit of that talk, Hhere are some accessibility resources that we recommend:ere are some accessibility resources that we recommend:
Thank you for sharing these accessibility resources.
I would like to mention a current accessibility issue affecting the new Flutter-based Ubuntu installer that may be relevant to this discussion.
When using Orca, dropdown menus in the installer — especially during manual disk partitioning — are not properly announced. Instead of reading the control name or selected value, Orca only says “alert”. This makes manual partitioning impossible for blind users.
I tested this on recent Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute) daily builds and the issue is still reproducible.
I have already reported it through the official channels:
Launchpad bug:
GitHub issue:
The issue has also been recorded as failed installer tests in the Ubuntu ISO QA Tracker.
Since the new installer is used across most Ubuntu flavors, this may impact accessibility for many users if it reaches the upcoming LTS release without a fix.
If anyone involved in Ubuntu accessibility or the installer development has insights or suggestions, I would really appreciate the guidance.
