Ability to save all posts in Topic discussion as a local PDF with a single click

Ubuntu Version

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Desktop Environment (if applicable)

MATE

Problem Description

I was looking for a Meta heading but did not find one. Site Feedback did not seem like the right place for this.

Is there a way to somehow save all postings within a Topic discussion as a single contiguous PDF on my Desktop drive?

Is there an alternate … recommended … method for doing that?

If not, is there any remote possibility that the Forum would consider implementing such a capability/feature?

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

What I’ve Tried

I have both

  • Print Friendly & PDF, and
  • PDF Mage

and neither can do what I would like to do.

Also, if I try to select the text from start to finish of a discussion, the Browser/OS can’t seem to capture the entirety of the discussion as a single content for PDF formatting using the built-in Print option, providing only a subset of the information.

Site Feedback is exactly the right place to ask questions like this and not Support and Help.

To answer the question; short version, yes it should be possible.

Longer answer (based on ask.discourse.com)

Recommended method: the built-in “Print topic” view

Discourse renders the entire topic server-side into a dedicated print view, which you can convert to a single, contiguous PDF.

  • Open the topic and press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or ⌘+P (macOS)

  • This opens a pre-rendered print window

  • In the print dialog, choose “Save as PDF” as the destination and save it to your Desktop

You can also trigger the same view directly by appending /print to the topic URL, e.g. https://your-forum.com/t/your-topic-slug/123/print.

Tip: Using the keyboard shortcut / /print route is important — if you just use your browser’s File → Print menu, you’d need to scroll from the first post to the last so all posts load into view. The /print route handles that for you.

I have not tried this so your feedback is important.

Edit: tested both methods, both work perfectly.

Thanks

Very useful - I had no idea that this even existed

@rubi1200 If a Discourse Magician badge existed, I would nominate you as the first recipient

Thank you SO much, Rubi!

Until now, that is probably the single most useful piece of info I have been offered on this site!

Since I’m not a “keyboard-sequence” enthusiast, it never crossed my mind to try that, even though the CtlP is as ancient an sequence as the existence of MS-DOS!
