26.04 OCI Images Don’t Exist

When 26.04 was released, Canonical wrote this post and claimed 26.04 OCI images are available, but as of today, they still aren’t on Oracle Cloud, and existing VM’s aren’t updating from 24.04. It says there isn’t a new LTS available. Can someone from Canonical chime in when these images will be available? When an upgrade pathway for existing VM’s will be possible?

Regarding this bit, if you read the Release Notes for Ubuntu 26.04, the 24.04 → 26.04 upgrade paths won’t open until 26.04.1 which is due in late August. This is typical for LTS releases. On any infrastructure.

To address the OTHER part of your post about “stating OCI images are available”: that only means that images “ready for use” are available from Ubuntu. However, it does NOT mean they’re ready for use publicly on Oracle Cloud

The only part referencing Oracle Cloud is this:

With optimized images across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud and Oracle Cloud, developers and enterprises can rely on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS for their most demanding public cloud workloads.

Nowhere does this say OCI images are actually available for public use on OCI. It simply says that optimized images may exist and may be used across the various infrastructures.

Canonical does not control Oracle Cloud. Just because images are “available” does not mean that Oracle has made them available on their infrastructure. This is the same for other hosting providers beyond AWS, Azure, Google, etc. such as OVH. (For example, OVH has only just recently started to offer 26.04 images for certain systems, and it took them almost a month to do so. Likely due to testing, making sure stuff works, etc.)

To that end, it’s up to Oracle Cloud to handle availability of the pre-made images on their environments. Not Canonical. So you should be directing your concerns to Oracle, not Canonical.
