Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Kernel Version
The Canonical Kernel Team is happy to announce that Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon) is shipping with the final 7.0 Linux kernel! ![]()
What This Means for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Users
The good news is that all Ubuntu users will get a more stable, bleeding edge, absolutely latest upstream 7.0 Linux kernel from day one when installing Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. This is particularly important for LTS releases, for which Canonical provides 15 years of support.
Background Discussion
As shared in our previous post 26.04 Resolute Raccoon Kernel Schedule, we compared the upstream 7.0 Linux kernel development schedule with the Ubuntu Resolute Raccoon Release Schedule. Based on this comparison, the Canonical Kernel Team initial plan was to do a final Ubuntu kernel rebase during the week of March 30. This meant that the 26.04 LTS final image was expected to feature a Linux kernel based on an upstream release candidate (more specifically 7.0-rc6).
Thanks to the Kernel Team’s excellent work on early integration, tests and bug fixing, the development cycle was progressing relatively smoothly, without major hiccups or blockers. This created the perfect conditions that allowed the Kernel and the Release Management teams to be bold, and push for a final upstream kernel rebase right on the final freeze week. While this move didn’t come without some last-minute complications, the teams acted quickly to fix all major issues and blockers and get a stable kernel on the Ubuntu archive on time for the final release image.
